383 (bonus) Answer: (b) It means that our salvation was the will of God
Read Ephesians 1:5, 11-14 Note: Using Ephesians 1:4 and 3:11, as well as 2 Thessalonians 2:13 and 2 Timothy 1:9, Carl Walther, in Law and Gospel: How to Read and Apply the Bible, page 484, tells his readers that predestination means that certain people were selected from sinful mankind for adoption as sons of God to receive eternal life through faith in Jesus before the world was formed. He further teaches that this election is based solely on God’s grace, not on any merit of man. Walther further states, “While the Bible does teach the predestination of the elect, it does not (as opposed to Calvin) teach the predestination of the damned.”
Note: The Lutheran Study Bible (Edward A. Engelbrecht, editor, page 2063) confirms Walther's position saying, “God predestines/elects no one to condemnation; this would be counter to His very character and being as the God of grace and mercy in Christ Jesus (Ezk 33:11; 1Tm 2:3–4; cf Jn 3:17–21; 2Pt 3:9).”
