The first book in Jesus’ Bible was Genesis and the last book was 2 Chronicles. The murder of Abel is recorded in Genesis chapter 4, and the murder of Zechariah son of Berekiah is in 2 Chronicles 24:20–22. Thus Jesus is saying, “Every drop of righteous blood that has been shed upon the earth, from the first murder in the first book of the Bible to the last murder in the last book of the Bible, will surely come upon this generation.” Only a couple days later, the people screamed, “His blood be on us and on our children” (Matthew 27:25). |
